One whole-house neutral

The color that runs through the connecting spaces — hallways, stairs, landings and any room you have no strong feeling about. It is the background the house is read against, and it should be chosen for the light in the darkest space it will appear in rather than the brightest.

One trim white, used everywhere

Consistency here is what makes a house feel finished. A trim white that sits slightly warm against a cool wall color, or slightly cool against a warm one, is doing its job — but it should be the same white in every room.

Two or three accent colors sharing an undertone

This is the discipline that matters. A warm-based green and a cool-based blue in adjacent rooms will look wrong together even though each looks fine alone. Colors from the same undertone family — all slightly warm, or all slightly cool — will always sit comfortably beside one another.

Inside any individual room, the reliable proportion is roughly 60% dominant color, 30% secondary and 10% accent.

or the majority of them.

The 30% is the large secondary presence

— an accent wall, the trim if it is doing real work, substantial furniture or a floor covering that reads as a block of color.

And the 10% is the accent

— a door painted in something deliberate, cushions, art, a single piece that carries the color you actually love.

The value of the rule is not arithmetic. It is that it stops a room from carrying two competing dominant colors, which is the specific failure that makes a space feel unresolved even when every individual color in it is good. It also gives you somewhere to put a bold choice. A homeowner who loves a deep color is far better served putting it on a front door, a powder room or a single wall than on four walls of the main living space — where it will be seen for ten years rather than admired for one.

A scheme is judged at the transitions, which is exactly where nobody tests it.

Stand in the doorway

Every doorway. If two rooms are visible at once — and on an open plan most of them are — the colors are being compared directly rather than sequentially, and they need to work in that comparison.

Change intensity, not family

The most reliable whole-house approach is one color family carried through at different strengths: a soft version in the connecting spaces, a fuller version in a room you want to feel enclosed, the palest version where light is short. Rooms stay distinct without ever colliding.

Let the trim carry continuity

A consistent trim white running through every room is what allows the wall colors to change at all. Without it, each room becomes its own island.

And treat the open plan as one room

Kitchen into dining into living is a single visual space, and the color has to work across all three from every angle. Deciding where a color stops — at an inside corner rather than mid-wall, at a change of ceiling height rather than arbitrarily — is a real decision worth making deliberately.

Three Rules for Samples

Sample on your own wall, large

Two feet square, minimum, on at least two walls in the room. A chip held up against a wall tells you almost nothing, because it is being read against the existing color rather than against the room.

Look at it at the times you actually live there

Morning, mid-afternoon, and under your own lamps in the evening. Minnesota light shifts dramatically across a day and across a year, and a color that is right in July can be leaden in January.

And put samples next to the things staying in the room

— the flooring, the counter, the sofa, the stone on the fireplace. Those have undertones too, and the wall color has to live with them rather than beside them.
