The finish quality on cabinets comes almost entirely from process control. Here is ours, stage by stage.

Free Walkthrough and Count

We count doors, drawer fronts and boxes, identify what the cabinets are made of and what is currently on them, check the condition of the hinges and the boxes, and talk through color and sheen. The written quote comes from that count, not from a per-linear-foot formula.

Labeling and Removal

Every door and drawer front is numbered and mapped before it comes off, so it returns to the opening it was made for. Hardware is bagged by location. This sounds trivial and it is the difference between doors that close flush and doors that nearly do.

Protection and Containment

Floors, counters, appliances and the adjoining rooms are covered and sealed. Your kitchen stays usable through most of the project, which is a large part of why people choose this route.

Cleaning and Degreasing

Kitchen cabinets carry years of cooking oil film, and nothing bonds to grease. Every surface is cleaned and degreased before any abrasive touches it. Skipping this is the single most common cause of a cabinet finish peeling at the six-month mark.

Sanding and Surface Preparation

Existing finish is scuffed to a mechanical profile so the primer has something to grip. Grain is filled where a smooth modern look is wanted; dents, chips and worn edges are repaired.

Priming

Spraying

Doors and drawer fronts are sprayed away from the house or in a controlled area, both faces, in thin even coats with sanding between them. Boxes and face frames are sprayed in place behind containment. Spraying is what produces the flat, hard, uniform surface of a sprayed enamel finish — a brush and roller cannot get there, whatever the product.

Curing

Cabinet coatings need real cure time before they take daily use. We tell you when the doors go back on and when the kitchen is fully back in service, and those are two different dates.

Rehanging and Adjustment

Doors go back to their mapped openings, hardware is reinstalled, hinges are adjusted so everything sits level and closes cleanly.

Choosing a Finish That Survives a Kitchen

Cabinets take more abuse than any other painted surface in a house: fingernails, cleaning products, steam, cooking oil, cupboard doors closing a hundred times a week. The coating has to be chosen for that, not for the swatch.

The finish has to cure hard

Cabinet-grade enamels and waterborne alkyds level out to a smooth film and then continue hardening for days after they stop feeling dry. That hardness is what resists chipping at the edges where hands land.

Sheen is a durability decision as much as a look

Satin is the most common choice in Twin Cities kitchens — enough sheen to wipe clean, restrained enough to look like cabinetry rather than appliance enamel. Semi-gloss cleans best and shows more surface texture, which is a reason to be honest about the grain you are starting with.

Color, practically
