A deck on a sound penetrating finish gets washed each spring and re-coated every two to three years. The re-coat is a wash, a light sand where needed and a fresh application — no stripping, no heavy sanding, no board replacement caused by exposure. It is a modest, predictable expense on a predictable rhythm, and the deck never looks bad.

The restoration cycle.

A deck left until the finish has genuinely failed needs the film taken off, the boards sanded back, the weathered surface fiber removed, failed boards replaced and the whole structure rebuilt to a coatable state before anything goes on. It costs several times a maintenance coat, and then — unless the rhythm changes — it happens again in eight years.

Higher ambient humidity extends drying and encourages growth in the grain — a cleaner-and-dwell-time problem rather than a pressure one.

Wooded lots.

Sap, needle and leaf fall on the boards, held in the gaps, keeping moisture against the wood continuously. Clearing the gaps is part of maintenance, not an afterthought.

— ultraviolet load stripping pigment out of the finish considerably sooner than shade does. The practical answer to all four is the same and it is unglamorous: wash it every spring, clear the gaps, and re-coat when the water stops beading rather than when the deck looks bad.

THE SEASON

When to Book Each Kind of Visit

Deck work follows the exterior season — roughly May through early October — with the wood needing to be dry through the board rather than dry on the surface.

Restoration timing

A restoration is best in late spring. The wood has dried out after snowmelt, the winter's damage is visible while it is still a repair, and the deck is finished and cured before the summer you want to use it.

Maintenance timing

A maintenance coat is more flexible, and late summer works well — the most stable drying conditions of the year and a deck that has already had a season of use since its spring wash. And the spring wash itself is best done as early as the weather allows, because the sooner the winter's debris comes off the less of it works into the surface.
