A large share of this city's original kitchens came out of the factory with a sprayed lacquer or conversion-varnish finish — hard, glossy, chemically cured, and specifically designed to resist things sticking to it. That is excellent while it is the finish you want. It is a problem the moment you want something else on top of it.

Ordinary primers do not bond to it.

They dry, they look fine, and they release later — usually at the edges and around the handles first, where fingernails and cleaning cloths work at them. A kitchen that chipped within a year almost always failed here.

Sanding alone does not solve it.

Scuffing gives a mechanical key, which helps, but on a cured lacquer the reliable answer is a bonding primer formulated for hard, low-porosity surfaces, applied over a properly degreased and scuffed substrate.

Grease makes it worse.

Kitchen cabinets carry years of cooking oil film, and a lacquered surface holds it on the outside rather than absorbing any of it. Degreasing is not optional on any cabinet job and it is doubly consequential on this one.

Identification walk details

How to tell what you have: factory lacquer is uniformly glossy across the whole door including the profile, with no brush marks anywhere and a slightly plastic feel. It is usually on doors from the mid-1970s through the late 1980s. Wipe an inconspicuous spot with denatured alcohol on a cloth — if color transfers, you are probably looking at a different finish entirely, and either way the walkthrough will confirm it.
