Hopkins houses were built modest and a great many have been extended — a family room off the back, a bedroom over the garage, a kitchen pushed out, a porch enclosed. Inside, that produces the condition we are asked about most in this city: a home that never quite feels like one house.

The trim profiles do not match, and that is the loudest signal.

Original 1920s or 1950s casing has a particular profile and a particular width. A 1998 addition has a stock modern profile. Standing in a doorway between them, you read the difference immediately even if you could not name it.

A single trim color across both is the fix, and it is remarkably effective.

Once every casing, base and door in the house is the same color and the same sheen, the profiles stop announcing themselves and the house reads as one thing that grew. It is the highest-value single decision available in an extended Hopkins house and it costs no more than painting the trim in one section.

The wall surfaces differ too.

Plaster in the original, drywall in the addition, occasionally panelling in an enclosed porch. Each takes its own preparation — and each takes color slightly differently, which is a reason to use one product across the whole house rather than matching a color between two different paints.

Frequently a cased opening or a widened doorway where original framing meets modern. The casing on one side may be deeper than the other, and the reveal at the head may not line up.
