What a Wooded Lot Does to a Color

This is the most useful thing we can tell a Minnetonka homeowner about choosing a cabinet color, and almost nobody is told it before the order goes in.

Foliage reflects green light into the room.

From roughly May to October, a kitchen with windows onto mature trees is lit substantially by light that has bounced off leaves. That light carries a green cast, and it lands on every surface in the room including your new cabinetry.

Warm whites go sickly. Cool whites go clinical.

The two most commonly chosen cabinet colors are the two most affected. A warm creamy white — chosen in February from a card, under a store light — can read distinctly yellow-green by June. A very cool white in the same room can go flat and gray. Greiges and taupes shift the most. Anything with a complex undertone reacts to a colored light source in ways a card cannot predict.

And it reverses in winter.

With the leaves down and snow on the ground, the same room is lit by cool blue-white light off snow. So a Minnetonka kitchen genuinely has two lighting seasons, and a color has to work in both.

The practical answer is unglamorous and it works: sample in the room, and leave the samples up.

Not for an hour — for a couple of days, so you see them in morning light, in afternoon light, and under the artificial light you actually cook by. Colors that tend to hold up here are those with enough depth or enough neutrality not to be pushed around: a true off-white with a restrained undertone, a deeper muted green or blue that is already committed to a direction, or a warm gray with a gray undertone rather than a beige one.
