Why is my cedar bleeding through the paint?

Because cedar contains natural tannins, and water carries them out through a coating that has nothing under it to stop them. The result is rust or amber streaking on a light finish, usually worst below knots, at end grain and under horizontal surfaces. It is not the paint failing — it is a missing stain-blocking primer, and the fix is a proper preparation sequence rather than another topcoat.

Why Light Trim on Cedar Goes Rust-Colored

Cedar is the defining material in this city — siding, shakes, trim, timber and screens across the 1970s and 1980s stock and much of what came after. It is a superb exterior wood and it has one specific behavior that catches homeowners and inexperienced crews alike.

Cedar contains water-soluble extractives.

Tannins, in ordinary language. They are part of what makes the wood naturally durable and resistant to rot, and they are also mobile: give them moisture and a path, and they travel to the surface.

A coating with nothing blocking underneath is a path.

Latex is permeable. Moisture moving through the wood carries the tannin out, and it deposits at the surface as the rust-brown or amber staining you see. On a dark finish nobody notices. On white or a light neutral — which is most trim — it is glaring.

It concentrates in predictable places.

Below knots, which are tannin-rich. At end grain, which absorbs and releases moisture more readily than face grain. Under horizontal surfaces where water sits, such as sill noses and the underside of a fascia. And on north elevations, where the wood stays damp longer.

The fix is a stain-blocking primer, and only that.

An oil-based or purpose-made blocking primer forms a barrier the extractives cannot pass. Skip it and no number of finish coats will hold the bleed back — the third coat streaks exactly as the first one did, which is why homeowners who try to solve this by repainting are so frustrated by it.

And where it has already happened

the affected areas are cleaned, the source spot-treated and blocked, and the finish reapplied. It is entirely correctable; it just has to be corrected properly rather than covered.

One caution about color

The paler the finish, the less forgiving it is. If your house sits under heavy cover on a north-facing lot and you are set on a bright white trim, that is achievable — it simply means the blocking stage is doing more work and it deserves to be specified rather than assumed. Where a homeowner is open to a slightly warmer or deeper trim tone, the same house becomes considerably more forgiving over the following decade. Preparation on a Cedar House

Growth in the grain, killed rather than blasted.

Under this city's canopy, north and east elevations grow biological film that lives in the grain. Pressure removes what you can see; a cleaner with a proper dwell time removes what regrows.

Sap and needle fall, which is a separate problem.

Pine and spruce resin on a wall is not removed by washing alone and will not be coated over successfully. It is treated specifically.

End grain sealed, everywhere it is exposed.

Cut ends on trim, the bottoms of vertical boards, rafter tails and beam ends. End grain is where cedar takes on and releases moisture, which makes it both the tannin route and the decay route.

Cupped or split shakes replaced rather than filled.

Cedar shake weathers gracefully until it does not, and a split shake is a water path into the wall behind it.

And the pressure kept low.

Cedar is soft. Excessive pressure raises and shreds the grain, and a furred cedar wall takes coating unevenly and holds dirt afterwards.
