The Line Between Ceiling and Beam Is the Result

Minnetonka's wooded-lot houses were built with timber inside as well as out: exposed beams across a vaulted living room, a boxed structural member spanning a family room, timber purlins on a tongue-and-groove ceiling, or applied beams added for the look of it. Where sprayed texture meets that timber, the junction is the whole job.

The original line is almost never clean.

Texture was sprayed, so it landed on the beam faces as well as the ceiling. Forty years later there is usually a rough, feathered edge of overspray on the timber — sometimes painted over, sometimes just there.

Getting a crisp line back is the value.

The beams are masked and protected, the texture is worked back to the timber by hand rather than run into it, and the ceiling is skimmed to a genuinely straight edge along the beam. Done properly, the difference is dramatic: the beams read as deliberate again instead of as things the ceiling was sprayed around.

Both sides of every beam count.

A single beam across a room is two long cut lines, two inside corners where beam meets ceiling, and the returns at each end where it lands on a wall. Three beams is six of each. That is the arithmetic behind the price.

The overspray on the timber is a separate decision.

Cleaning texture residue off a beam without damaging the finish underneath is careful work, and where the timber is going to be refinished anyway it is straightforward. Where it is staying as it is, we will tell you honestly how clean it will come. And this is the moment to decide about the beams themselves. If they are being painted, they are painted before the ceiling is finished, not after. If they are staying natural, they get protected and the line is cut to them. Deciding afterwards means doing work twice.

What These Rooms Carry

Vaulted and sloped planes

are common alongside the beams, which means staging built inside the room rather than working from the floor, and skim coating on an incline — a genuinely different skill from working flat.

Tongue-and-groove sections

appear on parts of some ceilings while the rest is drywall. Timber ceiling boards do not carry texture and are not part of the removal, but the junction between them and a textured plane is another line to cut.

Recessed lighting and fans on downrods
