Five Woods, Five Different Finishes

Plymouth has been building steadily since the 1960s, which means its kitchens run through every cabinet wood of the last five decades. Knowing which you have explains most of what a good quote will say.

Oak

— the defining wood of the 1980s and 90s and still the most common here. Deep, open grain that stays visible under a finish unless it is filled first. Whether to fill is a real choice with a real cost attached, and it is set out in full on the Eden Prairie page rather than repeated here.

Maple

— closed, fine and tight-grained. It takes paint beautifully and needs no filling to look smooth, which makes it the least complicated species to refinish. Its one quirk is that it can show blotching under a stain, which is why maple kitchens were so often painted or clear-coated to begin with.

Birch

— frequently used as a maple substitute in this era and behaves similarly: fine grain, smooth result, straightforward preparation.

Hickory

— strong, hard, dramatic grain variation, common on the more rustic 1990s kitchens. It paints well and, like oak, will show its grain unless it is filled. Homeowners are sometimes surprised how much character disappears under a solid color, which is worth thinking about before committing.

Pine and knotty pine

— softer, and the knots will bleed tannin through a light finish unless they are spot-primed with a blocking primer. That is a preparation step rather than a difficulty, and skipping it is why some painted pine cabinetry develops amber rings after a year. And laminate, thermofoil and factory-lacquered doors, which are not wood at all and need a bonding approach entirely. THE MIXED KITCHEN

When Half Your Cabinetry Was Added Later

A city that has been building and remodeling continuously for sixty years produces a lot of kitchens that are not all one thing. An original run, an island added in a remodel, a pantry cupboard built in later, a laundry cabinet that came from somewhere else entirely — different woods, different door profiles, different ages, in one room. Refinishing is unusually good at resolving that, and it is one of the strongest arguments for painting a kitchen rather than replacing part of it.

A single finish unifies mismatched wood immediately.

Two runs that never looked related because one is oak and one is birch become one kitchen the moment they share a color. That is a result no amount of staining can achieve, because stain reveals the difference rather than hiding it.

Door profiles still read, and that is usually fine.

A shaker run beside a raised-panel run will still be visibly two profiles after painting. In most kitchens that reads as a house that has evolved rather than a mistake — and where it does not, replacing the doors on one run while refinishing everything else is a legitimate and much less expensive plan than a new kitchen.

The species do need different preparation, though.

An oak run and a maple run in the same kitchen are two preparation sequences, and an open-grained run beside a smooth one will show that difference unless the oak is filled. That is exactly the sort of thing that has to be established at the walkthrough rather than discovered at the first coat.

And a later addition may not be wood at all.

A 2005 island with a thermofoil skin sitting beside 1988 oak is a real possibility here, and the two need entirely different approaches — or in some cases the island is not a candidate while the rest of the kitchen is. You will hear that plainly.
