House Painting on a Budget Done Properly
House painting on a budget works by reducing what you paint, not by reducing how well it is painted — and the difference matters enormously.

How do I paint my house for less?
Cut scope, not standard. Do the elevations that are actually failing rather than all four. Do trim and doors and leave sound siding alone. Split a whole-house interior across two winters. Every one of those saves real money and leaves what you did buy intact. What does not work is asking for the same scope at a lower price, because the only thing left to remove is preparation.
There Is Only One Place Left to Cut
When three quotes come back and one is dramatically below the others, the instinct is that the low one has found efficiencies. Occasionally that is true. Far more often it has found the only variable there is.
Materials are 15% to 20% of a residential painting project
Labor is everything else, and preparation is most of the labor
And preparation is invisible on the day the job finishes
Which is why "spend less" and "pay less for the same scope" are completely different requests
Reduce the Scope, Keep the Standard
Do the elevations that are failing
Do trim, doors and garage doors only
Split an interior across two winters
Prioritize what protects over what decorates
Do the accessible parts yourself
And book in the shoulder season
Four Things That Are Not Optional
Surface preparation
Priming bare substrate
Two coats on the body
And wood repair
What a Sensible Order Looks Like
For a house that needs a lot and a budget that will not carry it in one season, there is a defensible order.
Year one: whatever is letting water in
Year two: the elevations that are visibly failing
Year three: the remaining elevations, the deck, and anything cosmetic
And interiors slot into the winters in between
Four Projects With the Highest Return
If the question is simply "what should I spend my first two thousand dollars on," these four come up repeatedly.
Trim, doors and garage doors on the exterior
Cabinet refinishing
Interior trim and doors
And the front door and entry surround
