How do I prepare a deck before staining it?
Clear it, clean the gaps between boards, wash with a wood cleaner rather than pressure alone, address any failed film, make repairs, then wait until the wood is dry through the board rather than dry on the surface. That last step is where most deck projects fail — a stain applied over damp wood cannot penetrate, so it sits on top and wears out in a season.
Six Steps, and Skipping One Undoes the Rest
One — clear everything off and look underneath
Two — clean out the gaps between the boards
Three — wash it properly
Four — establish whether the old finish is failing
Five — make the repairs
Six — wait
Dry to the Hand Is Not Dry Through
Every other stage on this page is visible work. This one looks like doing nothing, which is exactly why it gets compressed.
A penetrating stain has to get into the wood
Surface dry happens in hours. Dry through the board takes days
How long depends on things you can assess
The usual test is water on the boards
And new wood needs longer still
Three Differences Worth Knowing
Vertical surfaces shed water
The bottom of a post is the whole game
And the sun-facing side ages ahead of the other
Four Things That Save a Day
Everything off the deck
Plants near the structure protected or moved
An honest note of what you already know is wrong
And a realistic view of the weather
Four Things That Need Carpentry First
Preparation makes a sound deck ready for a finish. It does not make an unsound one safe, and it is worth knowing the difference before you spend money on stain.
Stair stringers that have gone soft
Posts at ground contact
Ledger connections
And boards that flex underfoot
