A deck left until the finish has genuinely failed needs the film taken off, the boards sanded back, the weathered surface fiber removed, failed boards replaced and the whole structure rebuilt to a coatable state before anything goes on. THE SEASON

When to Book Each Kind of Visit

Deck work follows the exterior season — roughly May through early October — with the wood needing to be dry through the board rather than dry on the surface.

A restoration is best in late spring. The wood has dried out after snowmelt, the winter's damage is visible while it is still a repair, and the deck is finished and cured before the summer you want to use it.
