The Wall Everyone Sees and Nobody Can Reach

The Eden Prairie house of the 1980s and 90s came with a two-story entry, and it is simultaneously the most visible interior surface in the building and the hardest one to work on.

It is the first thing anyone sees.

Every guest stands in it. Every delivery is taken at its door. If it is tired, the whole house reads tired regardless of what the rooms behind it look like.

It cannot be reached from a ladder.

An eighteen or twenty-foot wall above a stair run has no floor beneath most of it. Doing it properly means staging built inside the space, and doing it improperly means a ladder braced somewhere it should not be, a rushed cut at the ceiling line, and a result that looks fine from the door and poor from the landing.

The ceiling line is the tell.

Where the wall meets the ceiling eighteen feet up, the cut has to be as clean as the one at eye level — and it is exactly where a crew without proper access compromises. It is worth looking up at yours before deciding whether the last job was well done.
