When There Is Something Worth Protecting Overhead

Edina's period-revival houses carry ceiling detail that most of the metro does not — a plaster medallion at the light fitting, a cove where the ceiling meets the wall, crown returns, and in the more formal rooms applied ornament that was cast in place. Where texture has been applied over or beside that — usually as a later addition in a mid-century remodel — removing it is a considerably more careful job than scraping a flat plane.

FEATURE 01

Ornament does not get scraped.

Anything raised, cast or molded is masked and protected before a scraper goes near the ceiling, and the texture is worked back to its edge by hand rather than run through it. On a medallion in particular, a moment of carelessness is not repairable with filler — the profile is gone.

FEATURE 02

Coves are the hardest edge in the room.

A cove is a curved transition with no crisp line to cut to, and skim coating up to one without losing its radius is genuinely skilled work. It is also exactly where a rushed crew leaves a thickened, softened edge that reads as sloppy forever.

Crown returns and the wall junction.

Where crown molding meets the ceiling, the texture has usually been run right up to it and sometimes onto it. Getting a clean line back means working to the molding rather than across it.

Most period-district houses were finished with plaster ceilings, flat and hand-floated, so where texture appears in the Country Club District or Morningside it is nearly always a later application — frequently over plaster that had begun to crack, since that is what texture is for.

Plaster does not release texture the way a drywall paper face does. It is harder, less absorbent, and scraping it back to a flat plane requires more physical effort and a different angle on the blade to avoid gouging.

On a ceiling approaching a century old, the plaster keys holding the plaster to the wood lath behind it can be loose or broken. Scraping puts vibration into the ceiling, so sounding the plaster by hand for hollow areas or movement is part of the assessment. Where the plaster is loose, it is a stabilization repair before it is a scrape.

Mid-century, basements & age testing.

Indian Hills, Rolling Green and post-war developments south of Highway 62 carry texture on drywall, which is the simpler version. Lower levels finished since the 1960s carry it as a rule. On age: anything pre-1980s is tested before disturbance. We do not test or abate.

And staining near an exterior wall.

On a shallow roof structure (common in mid-century styling) a stain near the eaves often points at condensation from poor ventilation or ice dams rather than a discrete roof leak. We block the stain; where the cause is live, it needs fixing first.
