Three Ways It Differs From Treated Lumber

Most decks in this city are cedar, and most generic deck advice is written for pressure-treated pine. The differences are real and they change the work.

FEATURE 01

Cedar is soft, so pressure is the enemy.

A washer setting that cleans treated lumber without complaint will raise and tear cedar's surface fibers. A furred cedar deck then absorbs stain unevenly, holds dirt, and feels rough underfoot — and the damage is only correctable by sanding it back. The correct approach is a cleaner doing the work with a low-pressure rinse, which is slower and looks less impressive and is the only thing that does not damage the boards.

Cedar has extractives, and they move.

The same tannins that streak white trim on a cedar wall will discolor a light stain on a cedar deck, particularly around knots and at end grain. On a semi-transparent finish this reads as natural variation and is usually fine. Under a very light or solid finish it needs blocking.

FEATURE 03

Cedar drinks a first coat.

It is more absorbent than treated lumber, so the first application soaks in and the surface can look thin or uneven — which is normal and is why the specification matters. An uneven sanding job shows up immediately on cedar in a way it does not on pine, because the more open areas take more stain. And cedar weathers to silver rather than gray-green. That silvering is the surface lignin degrading under UV. It looks handsome on a fence and it means the surface layer is holding moisture rather than shedding it, so it is not purely cosmetic.

Which finish suits it:

a penetrating semi-transparent, almost always. It shows the grain cedar is worth having, it carries enough pigment to block UV, and it wears by fading rather than peeling — so the next cycle is a wash and a re-coat rather than a strip. Solid stains on cedar decking are the route to a stripping project three years from now.
