Should I paint the wood in my Minnetonka house?

Some of it, usually. Panelling and dated built-ins are the highest-value things to paint and the easiest to justify. Structural beams, good original window frames and a well-detailed stair are frequently better left natural, because they are what the house was designed around. It is close to irreversible in one direction, so the honest answer varies room by room rather than house by house.

A House Built Around Timber

Minnetonka's wooded-lot houses were designed to bring the outside in, which means natural wood inside as well as out: exposed beams, panelled walls, timber window frames and surrounds, tongue-and-groove ceilings, stair treads and rails, and built-in shelving in the same material. Some of that is the reason the house is good. Some of it is simply dark. Telling them apart is the whole conversation, and it is worth having properly rather than defaulting either way.

FEATURE 01

Paint the panelling.

Full walls of 1970s panelling, and the sheet panelling used in lower levels and dens, are consistently the highest-impact and least contentious thing to paint in these houses. A room can go from dim and dated to light and current in a day, and almost nobody regrets it. It needs a bonding primer rather than an ordinary undercoat.

FEATURE 02

Paint the dated built-ins.

Shelving units, wet bars and cupboard runs in a dark stain — same reasoning, same result.

FEATURE 03

Think hard about beams.

An exposed structural beam or a run of timber across a vaulted ceiling is usually doing the architectural work in the room. Painting it flattens the space and it is not reversible. Where the beam is genuinely good, we will say so — including when saying so means less work for us.

FEATURE 04

Think hard about window frames.

Timber frames and surrounds around a window wall frame the view, which is the whole point of the house. They are also the surfaces most homeowners want lighter. There is often a middle answer: paint the casing and leave the frame, or lighten the sash and keep the beam above it.

And tongue-and-groove ceilings

are the one people ask about most and regret painting most often. It is a genuine feature and it cannot be put back. Our estimator will give you an opinion rather than a menu. It is your house and your call — but you should have someone's honest view before it becomes permanent.

Sealed, Bonded and Blocked

FEATURE 01

Old varnish and lacquer need a bonding approach.

A cured clear finish is hard and low-porosity. An ordinary primer sits on it and releases later at the edges, which is why some painted panelling chips within a year.

FEATURE 02

Knots and resin need blocking.

Pine and knotty panelling will bleed amber through a light finish if the knots are not spot-primed first. Same mechanism as tannin on cedar, same fix.

FEATURE 03

Grain shows unless it is filled.

Oak and ash panelling will read as painted wood rather than a smooth wall. That is often desirable and it should be a decision rather than a surprise.

FEATURE 04

Profiles need sanding back at the edges.

Where trim and panelling have been coated repeatedly, the detail softens. Bringing it forward again is what makes painted timber look intentional rather than smothered.

FEATURE 05

And the room has to be genuinely sealed.

Sanding cured varnish generates fine dust that travels, and in a house with an open plan and a lot of soft furnishing that matters more than usual.
