WHAT IS DIFFERENT HERE

When Three Materials Share One Elevation

Plymouth has been building steadily since the 1960s rather than in one burst, and its builders liked to combine materials. The result is the city's signature elevation: a brick or stone base or column, siding above or beside it, and painted trim tying the two together. That is a scheme problem before it is a painting problem, and it is where most exterior color decisions in this city go wrong.

The masonry is the fixed point, and it sets the temperature.

Brick and stone are not being changed, and they carry a strong undertone — warm reds and oranges in older brick, cool grays and taupes in the manufactured stone common on the 1990s and 2000s stock. Everything else has to be chosen against that. A cool-toned body against a warm red brick is the single most common misfire we are asked to correct.

FEATURE 02

Look at the mortar, not just the brick.

Mortar occupies a surprising share of a masonry surface and it is frequently a different temperature from the brick itself. On a large brick face the mortar is often what the eye actually reads.

FEATURE 03

The trim has to work twice.

It meets the siding on one side and the masonry on the other, which means a trim color that looks right against one can look accidental against the other. This is the decision worth spending the most time on.

FEATURE 04

Transitions need a plan.

Where siding meets stone, where a brick column stops, where a water table runs across an elevation — those junctions are what make a facade read as designed or assembled. They are also where caulk lines fail, so they get attention structurally as well as visually.

And the paintable area is often smaller than expected.

On a heavily masoned elevation the actual scope may be trim, soffit, fascia, garage doors and one or two siding faces — which is good news for the number and worth establishing early rather than assumed.

Three Rules for a Mixed-Material Elevation

FEATURE 01

Start with what is staying and work outward.

Roof, brick, stone, any manufactured stone accent. Those four things set the range before a fan deck is opened, and ignoring them is how a house ends up with a body color that fights its own chimney.

FEATURE 02

Reduce, do not add.

A facade already carrying three materials does not need three paint colors on top of them. Body, trim and one accent is usually the whole scheme, and on a heavily masoned elevation body-and-trim alone is frequently better.

See it in this light, at the time of day you look at the house.

Northern light in Minnesota is cool and blue-shifted, and snow reflects it back up at the wall for months of the year. A warm greige on a card can go pink against a red brick in February. Samples go on your actual wall, next to your actual masonry, before anything is ordered. Your estimator will walk this with you. On a mixed facade it is the part of the job that makes the largest visible difference and it costs nothing extra.
