What Each Part of It Is Good For

Minnesota gives exterior work a genuinely short window, and the parts of it behave differently.

TIP 01

Early May is optimistic more often than not.

The calendar says spring; the north and east elevations say otherwise. Ground is still holding meltwater, shaded walls stay damp well after the sunny ones have dried, and overnight temperatures frequently drop below what a coating needs to cure properly. Work happens in early May, but it happens on south and west elevations of dry-lot properties rather than everywhere.

Late May through June is the first genuinely good stretch.

Everything has dried out, temperatures are stable, and days are long. It is also, unsurprisingly, the most contended part of the calendar.

TIP 03

July and August work, with one caveat.

Heat is not the problem people expect — the problem is drying too abruptly. A wall in direct afternoon sun can skin over before the coating has flowed out properly, which is why sequencing follows the sun around the house rather than working clockwise for convenience.

TIP 04

September is the other genuinely good stretch,

and arguably the best of the year. Stable temperatures, lower humidity, less contended than June.

And early October is a judgment call each year.

Overnight temperatures are the constraint. A coating that is applied on a mild afternoon and then sits at four degrees overnight has not cured — it has stopped. After that it is over. Not "difficult" — over. Anyone offering to paint your siding in November is telling you something about how their season went.

Four Things That Matter More Than the Calendar

Surface temperature, not air temperature.

Products have a minimum application temperature, and it refers to the surface. A wall in shade on a cool morning can be well below the air reading, and a north elevation lags the rest of the house all day.

Whether the substrate is dry through, rather than dry on top.

This is the one homeowners most often underestimate. A wall that looks dry after overnight rain can still be holding moisture in the board, and a coating applied over it cannot bond properly. On a shaded lot, near water, or in a river valley, that takes considerably longer than the forecast implies.

The overnight low, not just the daytime high.

A coating cures over hours, not minutes. What happens after the crew leaves matters as much as what happened while they were there.

And what is coming.

Rain within the cure window is a problem in a way that rain the following week is not.

All of which is why a contractor who moves your start date is usually doing you a favor. A day lost to waiting costs nothing. A wall coated over damp substrate fails in its first season, and by then nobody remembers the weather that week.

THE OTHER CALENDAR

Winter, and Here Is Why

This is the practical advice that saves people the most, and it has nothing to do with paint.

Five months of demand compresses into five months of capacity.

Every exterior project in the metro has to happen in the same window, so the good weeks are reserved months in advance. A homeowner calling in June is choosing from what is left rather than from what they wanted.

A walkthrough in January or February costs nothing and carries no obligation.

It gets you a written scope, a real number, and a place in the schedule before the schedule exists.

It also gives you time to decide properly.

Color takes longer than people think, particularly if samples need to go on the wall and be looked at across several days. Association approval, where it applies, takes weeks. Neither of those compresses well in May.

And the answer might be that it can wait.

A winter walkthrough that concludes your house has two more good years in it has saved you the entire cost of the project, and you have lost an hour.

Interior work, cabinet refinishing and ceiling work run all year and are least contended from November onward — which is precisely when nothing outside can be touched.

that is a genuinely useful symmetry: exterior in the summer window, interior in the winter one. You are competing with everyone else for the first and almost nobody for the second, and the same crew can do both without either project being squeezed.

The one thing worth planning around is a house with a lot to do.

Splitting an exterior across two seasons — the failing elevations this year, the rest in two — is a legitimate approach and frequently the right one on a budget.
