Fade Resistant Paint: What Actually Holds Its Color

Fade resistant paint is mostly a pigment question, and the color you choose decides more about how long it lasts than the brand on the can does.

QUICK ANSWER

What makes exterior paint fade-resistant?

Pigment quality, and the color itself. Inorganic pigments β€” the earth tones, oxides and most neutrals β€” hold their color for years. Organic pigments, which produce the vivid reds, bright blues and strong yellows, break down under ultraviolet light considerably sooner. A premium line buys you better pigment, but choosing a color from the stable family buys you more.

PRACTICALLY

A Rough Ranking of Color Stability

Which colors hold their shade and which fade under UV light:
TIP 01

1. Excellent β€” whites, off-whites, greiges, taupes, most grays, earth tones and muted greens.

Almost entirely inorganic pigment. These hold for the full life of the coating, and it is not coincidence that they dominate exterior color in this market.
TIP 02

2. Very good β€” navy, charcoal, deep blue-grays and near-blacks.

Darker and therefore hotter, but the colorants involved are largely stable. They fade slowly and evenly rather than patchily, which reads as ageing rather than as failure.
TIP 03

3. Moderate β€” deep greens and browns,

depending heavily on how they are formulated. Worth asking about specifically rather than assuming.
TIP 04

4. Poor β€” vivid reds, bright blues, strong yellows and anything genuinely saturated.

These are the organic pigments, and on a south or west elevation in this climate they will visibly shift within a few years. They can be beautiful and they are a maintenance commitment rather than a decision made once. The practical guidance is not "avoid color." It is: put the stable colors on the large surfaces, and put the vivid one somewhere modest and repaintable. A front door in a strong color is a delight and it takes an afternoon to refresh. The same color on four elevations is a repaint.
THE MECHANISM

Ultraviolet Light Breaks Pigment Down

Fading is not the coating wearing away. It is the pigment inside the coating being destroyed by ultraviolet light while the film is still perfectly intact.

01

Two kinds of pigment behave very differently.

Inorganic pigments are mineral-based β€” iron oxides, titanium dioxide, earth colors. Their structure is stable under ultraviolet exposure and they hold for a very long time. Organic pigments are carbon-based, and they produce the colors inorganics cannot: vivid red, bright blue, strong yellow, deep purple. They also break down under ultraviolet light in a way inorganics do not.
02

Which is why a barn-red house fades and a taupe one does not.

The taupe is made of minerals. The red is made of something the sun can take apart.
03

Depth of color compounds it.

A deep, saturated color needs a great deal more pigment to achieve, so there is more colorant in the can and more of it exposed at the surface. Deeper colors also absorb more heat, which accelerates the breakdown of the binder holding everything together.
04

And this state loads the surface twice a year.

Direct sun through a long summer, then reflected sun off snow through a long winter β€” a large white reflector sitting in front of the house for months. Near a lake it happens again off the water. The annual ultraviolet dose here is higher than the latitude suggests.
BY ELEVATION

Your House Does Not Fade Evenly

FEATURE 01

South and west go first, by years.

They take the most direct sun and the most heat. On a house approaching the end of its cycle, the difference between the south wall and the north wall of the same building is frequently obvious once you look.
FEATURE 02

Horizontal surfaces go well ahead of vertical ones.

Sill noses, the tops of trim boards, deck rails, window ledges. Sun hits them square rather than at an angle.
FEATURE 03

And anything near reflected light doubles up.

A wall facing a lake, a light-colored driveway, or a large expanse of roof.
FEATURE 04

This matters for a practical reason:

it means an exterior does not have to be repainted all at once. Doing the two failing elevations now and the other two in three years is a legitimate approach and a real saving β€” with one caveat, which is matching color at a corner where two elevations meet in plain view. Worth discussing before rather than after.
BEYOND PIGMENT

Three Things That Help Preserve Color

01

Two coats at the proper spread rate.

More pigment in the film means more of it to lose before the color shifts visibly. A single thin coat fades noticeably sooner, which is one of several reasons it is a false economy.
02

Washing the house every couple of years.

Atmospheric grime and biological growth dull a color long before the pigment has actually failed. A great many houses that look faded are simply dirty, and a proper wash costs a fraction of a repaint.
03

And a premium tier within whatever line you use.

This is where product choice genuinely does matter. The difference between an economy and a premium exterior product is largely pigment quality and binder quality, and both bear directly on fade resistance.
