THE BRIEF

Four Jobs, and Only One Is Aesthetic

Choosing color for a workplace is a different exercise from choosing it for a home, and treating it like an interior design decision is where most commercial schemes go wrong.

TIP 01

It has to flatter people under your actual lighting.

Most offices are lit artificially for most of the working day, and a great deal of commercial lighting is cooler than daylight. Cool-toned walls under cool lighting make skin tones look poor, which people notice without being able to say why — and it matters more now that a substantial share of meetings happen on camera. Warm neutrals do the opposite and they cost exactly the same.

TIP 02

It has to survive the traffic.

A color is only as good as the finish carrying it, and in a commercial interior the finish decision is more consequential than the color one. Flat paint in a corridor cannot be cleaned; it can only be repainted.

TIP 03

It has to still look considered in three years.

Commercial repaint cycles are longer than residential ones and budgets are approved in advance. A strong trend color that reads as dated by the second year is an expensive mistake in a way it is not at home.

TIP 04

And it has to work for people who did not choose it.

Staff spend more waking hours in the space than the person selecting the color does. A scheme that is interesting to look at once and tiring to sit in every day is a poor trade.

PRACTICALLY

Zone It Rather Than Applying It

Open work areas: neutral.

This is the surface people look at for eight hours. Warm greige, soft off-white, a light warm gray. It is not a lack of ambition — it is the background the rest of the scheme needs.

Reception and the entry: one deliberate decision.

This is where a stronger color, a deeper tone or a genuine brand statement belongs. It is seen briefly, by visitors, and it sets the impression for everything behind it.

Meeting rooms: darker than you would expect.

A deeper, quieter color reads as focused, controls glare on screens, and photographs considerably better on video calls than a bright white wall does. This is the most underused opportunity in commercial color.

Break areas and social space:.

warmer and less corporate. The one place where a scheme can lift without undermining anything.

Corridors:.

the neutral, in a washable finish, carried continuously so the floor reads as one building rather than as a set of departments.

And restrooms:.

clean, mid-tone, moisture-appropriate. Relative to their size they are the most-judged space in any commercial property.

THE COMMON MISTAKE

A Logo Is Not a Wall Color

This comes up on nearly every commercial project and it is worth being direct about.

FEATURE 01

Brand colors are designed for compact, high-contrast applications

— a logo, a sign, a screen. They are chosen to stand out against white at the size of a business card. Applied to sixty square feet of wall, the same color is overwhelming, and applied to a whole floor it is exhausting.

FEATURE 02

Saturated brand colors also fade.

The vivid reds, oranges and bright blues that make good logos are organic pigments, and on a wall with any daylight they shift measurably within a few years. On an exterior they shift considerably sooner still.

FEATURE 03

The version that works is restraint.

Brand color on one reception wall, or on a single architectural element, against a neutral scheme that lets it register. That reads as confident. Brand color everywhere reads as a franchise fit-out.

And where a brand standard genuinely mandates a color,

which is common in retail and franchise properties, it is worth confirming what it actually specifies. Frequently the standard governs signage and the entry rather than the whole interior, and the operator has more latitude than they assume.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

Four Things That Narrow the Range

Your lighting is the biggest variable.

Sample on your own walls under your own lights, at the time of day the space is actually used. A commercial interior lit by fixtures rather than windows behaves nothing like a showroom.

Existing flooring and furniture are usually staying.

Both have undertones, and a wall color has to live alongside them rather than being chosen in isolation.

Anything landlord-governed needs checking early.

In leased space, wall color, and particularly anything in common areas, may be specified in the lease. It takes five minutes to confirm and it is awkward to discover late.

And touch-up capability is worth specifying up front.

Ask for the product, color code and sheen to be recorded at the end of the job and keep some on hand. A corridor that can be touched up locally for three years is a corridor that stays presentable on a fraction of the budget.

THE OTHER OBSTACLE

Color Is Rarely One Person's Decision

On a commercial property the specification is usually the easy part. Approval is what delays projects, and a little planning removes most of it.

Establish who actually decides.

An operator, an owner, a facilities manager and a landlord may all have a view, and discovering the fourth one late is what turns a two-week decision into a two-month one.

Get physical samples in the space rather than circulating a color code.

A code means nothing to anyone who is not looking at a fan deck, and a decision made from a screen gets revisited the moment somebody sees the wall.

FEATURE 03

Take the decision in one meeting, in the space, at the hour it is used.

Under your own lighting, with the flooring and furniture present. A color approved in a boardroom for a warehouse office will be wrong.

And write down what was agreed

— area by area, with product, color and sheen. Not because anyone is being difficult, but because a project approved verbally in March gets questioned in June by somebody who was not there.

Where a brand standard applies,

confirm early what it actually governs. In our experience the standard usually specifies signage, the entry and the customer-facing zone, and leaves back-of-house and work areas open — which is considerably more latitude than most operators assume they have.
