Make a Room Look Bigger With Paint
To make a room look bigger with paint, the wall color matters far less than what you do with the ceiling, the trim and the doorways around it.

What paint colors make a room look bigger?
Light, low-contrast schemes read as larger — but the biggest gain is not the wall color at all. Painting the trim, the ceiling and the walls in closely related tones removes the visual boundaries that tell your eye where a room stops. Continuing one color through connected spaces does the same at a larger scale. Contrast is what makes a room feel enclosed, so reducing it is the whole technique.
Your Eye Is Counting Boundaries
Every strong line tells you where the room ends
Reduce the contrast and you blur the boundaries
This is why the "just paint it white" advice is only half right
And it is why the single highest-value change in a compact room is usually the trim
In Rough Order of Effect
Paint the trim close to the wall color
Bring the ceiling into the scheme
Continue one color through connected spaces
Paint doors the same color as the wall
Use the same color on the wall behind and around built-ins
And take the color right up
Three Things Worth Ignoring
"Never use a dark color in a compact room"
Horizontal stripes to widen, vertical stripes to heighten
And one bright accent wall to "add depth"
Light Behavior, Not Color
Sheen changes how a surface handles light, and in a tight room that has a real effect.
Flat absorbs and hides
Low-sheen on walls is the working compromise
Higher sheen on trim and doors
But be careful with high sheen on large surfaces
And in a genuinely dark room, sheen does more than color
Four Spaces Worth Treating This Way
The hallway
A bedroom under a sloped ceiling
The lower level
And a compact bathroom
