STAGE BY STAGE

Six Steps, and Skipping One Undoes the Rest

The exact sequence for preparing wood decks before applying stain:

TIP 01

One — clear everything off and look underneath.

Furniture, planters, the grill, the rug. Then look at what has been sitting under the planters, because that is where rot starts on a deck: a permanently damp patch under something that never moves.

TIP 02

Two — clean out the gaps between the boards.

This is the step that gets skipped and it matters more than it sounds. Needles, leaves and debris packed into the gaps hold moisture against the edges of every board continuously, which is why a deck under trees fails unevenly and sooner. A putty knife or a paint stirrer down each gap is tedious and it genuinely extends the life of the boards.

TIP 03

Three — wash it properly.

A wood cleaner with time to work, rather than pressure alone. Pressure moves what is visible and leaves the biological growth that regrows through a new coating within a season. On a deck with gray, weathered wood a brightener afterward restores a good deal of the original tone before anything is applied.

TIP 04

Four — establish whether the old finish is failing.

Press a fingernail at an edge. If the finish lifts or flakes, it is a film that has lost adhesion and it has to come off before anything new goes on. If the color has simply thinned with nothing to lift, it is a penetrating finish and a wash plus a fresh coat is enough. This single test is the difference between a modest project and a considerably larger one.

TIP 05

Five — make the repairs.

Loose fasteners re-set or replaced, split boards addressed, and anything soft replaced rather than coated. A soft board takes stain perfectly well and fails structurally anyway.

Six — wait.

Which is the next section, because it is where projects actually go wrong.

DRYING

Dry to the Hand Is Not Dry Through

Every other stage on this page is visible work. This one looks like doing nothing, which is exactly why it gets compressed.

A penetrating stain has to get into the wood.

That is the entire mechanism — it occupies the grain so water cannot. If the grain is already holding water, the stain has nowhere to go. It sits on the surface, dries unevenly, looks patchy within weeks and wears out inside a season.

Surface dry happens in hours. Dry through the board takes days.

After washing, or after rain, the top of a board can feel completely dry while the wood underneath is still saturated. Sunshine on the surface accelerates the first and does surprisingly little for the second.

How long depends on things you can assess.

A deck in open sun on a dry lot with good airflow underneath might be ready in two days. A shaded deck over damp ground, under a canopy, in a river valley or near a lake can be four or more. Elevated decks with airflow beneath dry considerably better than ground-level ones sitting on soil.

The usual test is water on the boards.

Splash a cup on the surface. If it soaks straight in, the wood is thirsty and ready. If it beads or sits, either the old finish is still working or the wood is holding moisture — and both mean waiting rather than applying.

And new wood needs longer still.

New pressure-treated lumber is usually shipped wet and needs weeks to months before it will take a penetrating stain. New cedar needs a shorter period but still needs one. Staining new timber too early is one of the most common and most disappointing mistakes on this list.

THE OTHER STRUCTURE

Three Differences Worth Knowing

FEATURE 01

Vertical surfaces shed water,

so fences generally wear more slowly than deck boards — the same reason a deck's railings outlast its floor. A fence and the deck beside it are frequently on different cycles, and quoting them as one averaged surface overcharges you for one of them.

The bottom of a post is the whole game.

Where timber meets soil is where a fence actually fails, and no amount of staining above it changes that. Worth inspecting before you spend anything on the fence at all.

And the sun-facing side ages ahead of the other.

On a boundary fence that means one neighbor's side looks considerably worse than the other, which is worth agreeing about before scheduling rather than after.

Four Things That Save a Day

particularly anything directly beneath where cleaner will run off.

An honest note of what you already know is wrong.

— a board that flexes, a rail that moves, the corner where water always pools. Pointing at it means it gets priced rather than discovered.

And a realistic view of the weather.

A deck project is more weather-dependent than almost anything else in painting, because it needs dry wood before and dry weather after. A contractor who moves your date is protecting the finish rather than being inconvenient.

THE HONEST LIMIT

Four Things That Need Carpentry First

Preparation makes a sound deck ready for a finish. It does not make an unsound one safe, and it is worth knowing the difference before you spend money on stain.

FEATURE 01

Stair stringers that have gone soft.

They sit closest to the ground, take the most water, and are the commonest structural failure on a residential deck. A stringer that gives when pressed is a replacement, not a preparation item.

FEATURE 02

Posts at ground contact.

Same principle as a fence post. Where a post meets soil or sits in standing water, the failure is at the bottom and staining the visible part changes nothing.

FEATURE 03

Ledger connections.

Where the deck attaches to the house is the connection that matters most and the one nobody looks at. It is outside a painting scope entirely, and if something there looks wrong you want a carpenter rather than a painter.

FEATURE 04

And boards that flex underfoot.

A board that moves is either fastened poorly or has gone past coating. Either way it is addressed before anything is applied, because a stain on a failing board is money spent on something being replaced within two seasons.
