Which Is Exactly Why Refinishing Wins

Savage's housing went up largely in the late 1990s and 2000s, which puts a great many kitchens here in an unusual position: fifteen to twenty-five years old, entirely functional, and unmistakably of their moment.

FEATURE 01

The cabinetry itself is fine.

The boxes are square, the doors are undamaged, the hinges close, the drawers run. There is no structural argument for replacing any of it, which means anyone proposing a replacement is selling you a color change at ten times the price.

FEATURE 02

What dates it is a specific palette.

Mid-tone cherry and maple stains, the darker glazed finishes that arrived around 2005, and the honey and golden tones just before them. Those read as their decade in a way that a shape does not, and they are precisely what refinishing removes.

The door style usually reads as neutral.

A raised panel or shaker profile from this era looks entirely current in a different color. Unlike a 1970s slab or a heavily routed 1980s door, there is nothing about the shape that needs apologizing for.

The islands are large and they are an opportunity.

These kitchens were built with substantial islands, and a two-tone treatment — perimeter in an off-white, island in a deeper tone — is the most common thing we are asked for here and the thing that most changes the room.

Perimeter and island in different tones is the dominant look in these kitchens and it costs slightly more in set-up, not in materials. Deciding at the walkthrough is straightforward; deciding after the doors come off is not.

How the counter reads against your candidates.

A speckled granite of this period pulls warmth from the room, and a white that looks crisp in the store can go yellow beside it. Samples go on your own doors, beside your own counter, before anything is committed.

Grain.

Maple and cherry telegraph less than oak, but they telegraph. Filling gives a fully smooth modern surface; leaving it keeps some wood character. Both are defensible and it is a pre-quote decision.

And hardware.

Fifteen-year-old handles are frequently doing more of the dating than the cabinet color is. Changing them while the doors are off means old holes are filled and re-drilled in the same pass, which is far tidier than doing it later. Beyond the kitchen, the same reasoning applies to everything else built in. Houses of this era came with a substantial primary bathroom vanity, a second vanity upstairs, frequently a built-in office or mudroom lockers, and all of it left the factory in the same finish as the kitchen at the same moment. Adding those to a kitchen project costs a fraction of what they cost as a separate visit, because set-up and mobilization are already paid for — and leaving them behind means a refinished kitchen sitting fifteen feet from cabinetry that still announces the year the house was built.
