Every homeowner considering a kitchen is really choosing between three things, and the sales pitch for each tends to omit what it does not do. Here is the honest version.

Refinishing keeps everything and changes the color.

Doors and drawer fronts come off, get degreased, de-glossed, primed with a bonding primer and sprayed; the boxes are finished in place to match. You keep your layout, your boxes, your doors and your hardware unless you change it. At $150 to $200 per door, a 30-door kitchen lands around $5,000 to $6,000. What it does not change is the door profile, the layout, or the counters.

Refacing keeps the boxes and replaces the doors and skins.

New doors and drawer fronts on your existing carcasses, with the visible box edges veneered to match. It typically costs two to three times a refinish. What you get for that is a new door profile — which is worth it if the profile is genuinely what you dislike, and is otherwise money spent to arrive somewhere paint would have taken you.

Replacing changes everything and costs accordingly.

Mid-range cabinetry alone runs well into five figures before counters, appliances, installation and the weeks without a kitchen. It is the right answer in specific circumstances and the wrong one in most.

Are the boxes sound?

We look inside, at the base of the sink cabinet especially, and at the shelf spans. Solid carcasses are worth keeping; swollen particle board is not.

Do the doors close properly?

Worn hinges and sagging drawers are fixable while everything is apart, and that is the moment to do it. Doors that are genuinely warped are a different conversation.

What is the existing finish?

A factory-lacquered door from the 1990s needs de-glossing and a bonding primer rather than an ordinary one. Skipping that is why previous attempts sometimes failed.

Is the counter doing the dating?

If a laminate or strongly patterned counter is the real problem, refinishing around it produces a partial result — and we would rather tell you that than take the work.
