Yes, and it is a different operation from removing it over drywall. Plaster does not tolerate wet scraping the way board does, it can be hollow where it has let go of the lath overhead, and the repair is a skim rather than a patch. It is entirely ordinary work — it is simply not the same price, which is why the substrate gets identified before anything is quoted.

Plaster and Drywall Are Different Jobs

Shakopee's 1999 median build year sits alongside a genuine pre-1940 core near Mainstreet, and that gives this city two distinct versions of the same project. The difference is not the room or the texture — it is what is underneath.

FEATURE 01

Over drywall, the sequence is well understood.

Mist the texture, scrape it off in sheets, expose the tape and the fasteners beneath, patch and skim what the texture was hiding, prime and finish. Predictable, and the great majority of what we do.

FEATURE 02

Over plaster, wet scraping is the wrong instinct.

Plaster and water are not friends, and soaking a plaster ceiling to loosen texture risks softening what is holding it to the lath above. It is worked differently, more carefully, and more slowly.

FEATURE 03

And plaster ceilings can be hollow before you start.

Over decades the keys — the plaster that squeezed through the lath and locked it in place — break down, and sections lose their grip on the ceiling above. That is found by sounding it rather than by looking at it, and where it has happened the honest answer is stabilization or replacement of that section rather than a skim over a loose ceiling.

The repair is a skim, not a patch.

A plaster ceiling that has been taken back needs bringing to a flat, continuous plane across the whole surface rather than filling in discrete spots. That is a genuine skill and it is where the labor sits.

And on housing this old, testing comes before disturbance, always.

Material of concern belongs to this era, and it is not a judgment call. In the subdivisions, none of that applies. Those houses came up smooth from new; where texture exists it is in a lower level finished later, over ordinary drywall.

Plaster ceilings, some of them textured decades after the house was built as a way of dealing with a surface that had aged. Whole-house scope, careful work, and the age question first.

Drywall with sprayed texture from construction, on every ceiling. This is the most straightforward version of this work — predictable scraping, predictable repairs, whole-house logic because doing one room leaves a visible transition at the doorway.

Smooth from new uppercase, texture only where a lower level was finished afterward. A contained project, priced higher per square foot than a bedroom because a basement ceiling is beams, bulkheads, duct soffits and recessed lighting rather than open plane. On all three, the walls are worth doing in the same visit. The room is already cleared and sealed, and coming back later costs meaningfully more than doing it now.

And on all three, what the texture was hiding comes into view.

Over drywall that is unfinished tape seams and fasteners that have backed out through decades of seasonal movement, plus the occasional old repair textured over to make it disappear. Over plaster it is settlement cracking and the places where a previous owner filled something with whatever was to hand. Water damage turns up in both — an ice dam that got into a top-level ceiling, or a long-past leak from a bathroom above — and where the drywall beneath a stain is soft it is replaced rather than patched.
