The refinishing price — $150 (2 coats) or $175 (3 coats) per door — covers removing your existing hardware and putting it back. New handles or hinges are a separate decision with a real cost: the hardware itself, plus filling and re-drilling where the hole spacing differs, plus the labor of fitting it. It is entirely worth doing on the right kitchen, and it belongs in the conversation before the quote rather than after.

Three Decisions, and What Each One Costs You

Refinishing changes the color of a kitchen. Hardware changes its era. Most homeowners realize that halfway through and ask about it when the doors are already off, which is the worst moment to be making the decision.

FEATURE 01

Keeping what you have.

Free, included, and frequently the right answer — particularly on the 1940s and 50s kitchens in this city, where the original hardware is often better made than what you would buy to replace it. It comes off, gets cleaned, and goes back.

Replacing handles on the same hole spacing.

The least expensive change: the hardware cost, and effectively no extra labor since everything is off anyway. Standard spacings mean this is more often possible than people expect — measure center to center before you assume otherwise.

Replacing handles on a different spacing, or going from knobs to pulls.

This is the one with a real cost attached. Every existing hole has to be filled properly — not just puttyed, because a filled hole that shrinks will telegraph through the finish within a year — and new holes drilled accurately, on a jig, on every door. It is straightforward work and it is genuinely more of it, and pricing it up front is the difference between a planned upgrade and an awkward conversation.

And the hinges are their own question.

Older kitchens frequently have surface-mounted or semi-concealed hinges that are visible on the face of the cabinetry. Painting them is possible; replacing them with concealed hinges is a bigger job that sometimes requires boring the door. If your hinges are the thing making the kitchen look dated rather than the door style, say so at the walkthrough — it changes the recommendation.
