Check what the doors are made of. Solid wood or a paintable factory-finished surface is straightforward. Thermofoil — a vinyl film wrapped over a substrate — is the main disqualifier, and the tell is a corner or an edge where the film has started to lift or peel away from the board underneath. Once that has begun, coating over it will not hold.

Open and close a few doors. Hinges that no longer hold alignment, doors that catch, drawers that do not run — none of that is fixed by paint, and all of it is worth resolving as part of the project rather than living with in a kitchen that otherwise looks new.
