Hiring an interior painter is a different question from hiring an exterior one β€” because this crew is inside your house while you live in it.

QUICK ANSWER

What should I ask an interior painter?

Four things an exterior quote never covers: what is included beyond walls β€” ceilings, trim, doors, closets β€” how repairs to the existing surface are handled, how the house is protected and reset each day, and whether you can live in it while the work runs. Those decide both the price and the week. Rooms here are quoted around $600 to $700 for 12x12 bedroom walls.

THE DIFFERENCE

Five Things That Never Come Up on an Exterior

Most advice about hiring a painter is written about exteriors, because that is the larger project and the more dramatic failure. Interiors have their own set of questions, and they are the ones people forget to ask.

ITEM 01

Scope is far more ambiguous.

An exterior is the outside of the house. An interior can mean walls only, or walls and ceilings, or walls and ceilings and trim and doors and closet interiors β€” and each of those is a materially different number. Two interior quotes that look thousands apart are usually just describing different amounts of house. Establish this before you compare anything else.
ITEM 02

The existing surface matters more than people expect.

Popped drywall fasteners, hairline cracks from settling, old patches that were never feathered, and nail holes throughout. Every one has to be re-set, skimmed and spot-primed before paint goes on, or it reappears through the new color within a season. Ask directly how repairs are handled and whether there is an allowance for what cannot be seen until furniture moves.
ITEM 03

You are living in the middle of it.

This is the part exterior advice never covers. Where does the furniture go, how are floors protected along the whole route the crew walks rather than only in the room being painted, are switch plates and hardware removed or cut around, and does the room go back to usable condition at the end of each day or stay under plastic for a week? These are reasonable questions and the answers vary enormously between contractors.
ITEM 04

Color is a real decision with real consequences.

On an exterior you are choosing one scheme. Inside, you are choosing for every room, and the rooms have to work together. A contractor who will sample on your own walls before committing is saving you from the most expensive interior mistake there is.
ITEM 05

And sheen matters as much as color.

Flat on ceilings, a washable low-sheen on walls that get touched, something harder on trim and doors. A quote that specifies one product throughout has not thought about how you use the house.
DUE DILIGENCE

Four Interior-Specific Checks

01

Ask what happens to your things.

Who moves the furniture, whether anything needs to go into another room, and what is covered. On a full-house interior this is a genuine logistical exercise and it should be discussed rather than assumed.
02

Ask about odor and ventilation, especially in winter.

Interior work runs all year here, and January in a closed-up house is a different proposition from June with the windows open. Modern products have made this far less of an issue than it once was, but the sequencing β€” which rooms when, and where people sleep β€” is worth agreeing in advance.
03

Ask who is actually in your house.

For an interior project this matters more than for an exterior. The same crew for the duration, background of the people coming in, and a named person you can raise something with. A firm with its own crews can answer this directly.
04

And ask to see interior work rather than exterior work.

Photographs of a repainted exterior tell you very little about cut lines, ceiling finish or trim work. Ask for interiors, ideally from a house of similar age to yours β€” a 1920s house with plaster and original woodwork is a different job from a 2005 build.
LIVING THROUGH IT

So You Can Plan Around It

FEATURE 01

A single room is usually a day or two,

depending on whether ceilings and trim are included and how much repair the walls need.
FEATURE 02

A full level is closer to a week.

Rooms get sequenced rather than opened all at once, so you keep somewhere to be.
FEATURE 03

Furniture moves to the middle and gets covered,

or leaves the room where there is somewhere for it to go. Anything fragile is worth moving yourself before anyone arrives.
FEATURE 04

Floors are protected along the whole route,

not only in the room being worked β€” which on a three-level house means the stairs as well.
FEATURE 05

Switch plates, vent covers and hardware come off

rather than being cut around. It is a modest thing that makes an obvious difference to how the finished room reads.
FEATURE 06

And the day ends with the space usable.

That is the standard worth asking for. A project that leaves your main floor unusable for a week is a different experience from one that resets each evening, and the difference is planning rather than price.
WHILE THE CREW IS THERE

Better Value Together Than Apart

Set-up, masking and protection are largely a fixed cost on an interior project, spread across whatever is in scope. That makes three things considerably better value when they go in the same visit than when they come back as their own project.

REQUIREMENT 01

Ceilings.

In a house with eight-foot ceilings the ceiling is read alongside the wall, and fresh walls under a yellowed ceiling frequently make the ceiling look worse than before you started. Doing them together costs meaningfully less than a return trip.
REQUIREMENT 02

Trim, doors and casings.

On a builder-grade interior this is often more visible improvement per dollar than the walls themselves, because it is what hands touch and eyes land on.
REQUIREMENT 03

And popcorn ceiling removal, if you have it.

This one has an order to it β€” ceilings come off before the walls are painted, because doing it the other way round means masking and repainting walls you have already paid for. Raise it at the walkthrough rather than after the quote.
REQUIREMENT 04

The general principle is that a second visit is expensive.

Anything you already know you want done inside the next two years is worth putting on the same estimate, even if you then decide against it.
THE NUMBERS

Rough Ranges for This Market

FEATURE 01

Rooms are quoted at roughly $600 to $700 for 12x12 bedroom walls.

A complete room runs about $1,500 to $2,500, which is meaningfully less than the same rooms quoted individually because set-up is a fixed cost spread across the work.
FEATURE 02

Ceilings are priced alongside and cost considerably less done in the same visit than as a return trip.

Two-story entries, great rooms and stairwells are priced as their own line, because they are staging work rather than ladder work.
FEATURE 03

The variable that moves an interior quote most is repairs.

On a newer house that may be a few hundred dollars. On a century-old house with plaster it can be a substantial share of the project β€” and it is the single thing most worth having itemized in writing.
