Should I paint it myself or hire a painter?
Interiors on a single level, one room at a time, with sound walls and no height — genuinely worth doing yourself if you have the weekends and the patience. Exteriors, anything above ladder height, anything needing staging, cabinets, ceilings and old houses with failing coatings — hire. The dividing line is not skill so much as access, surface preparation and how visible a mistake will be for the next decade.

It Is Not Money Against Skill
The comparison is usually framed as "save money and do it yourself" against "pay for a better result." That framing is wrong in both directions, and it leads people to the wrong decision surprisingly often.

Materials are a minor share of a painting project.
Labor is roughly 80% of what a contractor charges, materials and supplies 15% to 20%. So doing it yourself saves most of the price — but what you are buying with that saving is your own time, at a rate you should work out before committing. A whole-house exterior is not a weekend. It is several weeks of weekends, in a five-month season, during which the project is visible from the street in whatever state it has reached.

The equipment gap is real and it is mostly about access.
A homeowner can buy good brushes and a decent roller. What is harder to get hold of, and considerably harder to use safely, is what reaches a second-story gable, a stairwell wall, or a rear elevation standing three levels above a slope. Access is where most DIY exterior projects quietly become partial exterior projects.

And the durability gap is almost entirely preparation.
A homeowner using premium paint over inadequate preparation gets a result that looks excellent for a season and fails in three years. A contractor using mid-tier paint over thorough preparation gets ten. The visible difference on day one is nothing. The difference in year four is the whole project.

THE HONEST LIST
Five Where a Capable Homeowner Does Fine

A single room with sound walls.
A bedroom, an office, a dining room on the main level. Standard height, no repairs beyond filler and sanding, and no consequence if it takes three evenings instead of one. This is the classic case and it is entirely reasonable.

Trim and doors on their own.
Slow, fiddly, and forgiving — mistakes are correctable and nothing is at height. It is also the highest-impact interior work per dollar, which makes it satisfying to do yourself.

A fence.
Repetitive, at ground level, and hard to ruin. Wash it, let it dry properly, and apply a penetrating stain. If you are going to take one exterior project on, this is the one.

SPLIT THE PROJECT
Do the Easy Half Yourself
The best answer for a lot of households is not one or the other. It is splitting the work along the line above.

Hire the exterior, do the interior.
The exterior has the access problem, the season constraint and the consequences. Interiors are ground-level, forgiving, and can be done a room at a time over a year.

Hire the height, do the ground floor.
On an interior project, a contractor can do the two-story entry and the stairwell in a day and leave you the bedrooms.

Hire the preparation, do the finish coats.
Less common, and legitimate on some projects — though be aware it complicates who is responsible if something fails.

Or hire the whole thing this year and do the maintenance yourself afterward.
Ask for the product, color code and sheen at the end of the job, keep a little of each, and handle the touch-ups. That is the habit that makes a good paint job last its full life rather than its first half. A contractor worth hiring will tell you which parts are worth doing yourself. If you ask that question and get a flat "you should really let us do all of it," that is information.
