What is the best time of year for interior painting?
November through March, comfortably. Interior work is unaffected by the weather, and those are the months when nothing outside can be touched β so crews have room, dates are flexible, and you are not competing with the entire metro for the same week. The exception is a household that cannot lose rooms over the holidays, which is worth planning around.
You Are Competing With Almost Nobody
This is the single most useful thing to know about scheduling interior work in this state, and it is entirely about supply.
Every exterior project in the metro happens between roughly May and early October.
From November the pressure comes off completely.
It also tends to mean a more careful job,
And the products have made the old objection largely obsolete.
The one honest caveat is ventilation.
Five Things Worth Planning Around
Most of the timing regret we hear about has nothing to do with the season and everything to do with the household.
The holidays.
Before you move in, not after.
Before flooring, not after.
Before the furniture, if you are buying furniture.
And around anyone at home all day.
Less Than You Think, Except in One Case
In winter, two to four weeks is usually comfortable.
In peak exterior season, considerably longer,
The exception is a fixed deadline.
And the estimate itself takes longer than people expect.
Four Things That Prevent Delay
Final colors, sampled on your own walls.
Sheen per room.
What is in scope, room by room.
And where the furniture goes.
What Should Happen Before Paint, and What After
Where painting is one part of a larger project, the order matters more than the dates do, and getting it wrong means paying for work twice.
Before paint: anything that opens a wall or a ceiling.
Before paint: popcorn ceiling removal.
Before paint: drywall repair and any settling cracks.
After paint: flooring.
After paint: new trim and doors, if you are replacing them.
And roughly alongside: cabinets.
