Interior work is unaffected by the weather, and those are the months when nothing outside can be touched — so crews have room, dates are flexible, and you are not competing with the entire metro for the same week. THE CALENDAR

You Are Competing With Almost Nobody

This is the single most useful thing to know about scheduling interior work in this state, and it is entirely about supply.

ITEM 01

Every exterior project in the metro happens between roughly May and early October

Five months of capacity absorbing a year of demand. Through that stretch, interior work competes with exterior work for the same crews, and exterior work wins because it has nowhere else to go.

ITEM 02

From November the pressure comes off completely

Nothing outside can be painted, and every crew that was on a ladder in September is available for interiors. That means genuine choice of dates, more flexibility when something in your household shifts, and a project that is not being squeezed between two exteriors.

It also tends to mean a more careful job

for an unglamorous reason: nobody is watching the weather. A crew working an interior in January has no reason to rush a room to get ahead of rain on Thursday.

And the products have made the old objection largely obsolete

The reason people historically avoided painting inside in winter was odor in a closed-up house. Modern interior products are considerably lower in odor than they were, and sequencing handles the rest — which rooms when, and where people sleep. It is worth agreeing in advance rather than discovering.

The one honest caveat is ventilation

A January project in a house that is sealed up is a different proposition from June with the windows open, and a contractor should raise how they will handle it without being asked.

Five Things Worth Planning Around

Most of the timing regret we hear about has nothing to do with the season and everything to do with the household.

The holidays

A main level under plastic in the second week of December is a genuinely bad idea. Either finish well before, or start in the first week of January when the calendar clears and the schedule is at its most open.

Before you move in, not after

An empty house is the ideal interior painting project — no furniture to move, no rooms to sequence around, no living in the middle of it. If you are buying, the window between closing and moving is worth using even if it feels tight.

Before flooring, not after

If both are happening, paint first. Protecting a new floor is possible and it is considerably more nerve-racking than painting over an old one.

Before the furniture, if you are buying furniture

Choosing a wall color to work with a sofa you already own is a constraint. Choosing a sofa to sit against a wall you love is a pleasure.

And around anyone at home all day

Someone working from home, a new baby, a shift worker sleeping in the afternoon — all of it is workable and all of it is easier when the contractor knows before the schedule is set rather than on the first morning.

LEAD TIME

Less Than You Think, Except in One Case

In winter, two to four weeks is usually comfortable

Capacity is genuinely available and dates move easily.

In peak exterior season, considerably longer

because interior work is being fitted around the exterior calendar. If your interior project has to happen in July, book it in April.

The exception is a fixed deadline

A move-in date, a family event, a house going on the market. Anything with a date attached should be booked with real margin, because a project with no slack in it is a project where a single delay becomes a problem.

And the estimate itself takes longer than people expect

Walkthroughs here are typically scheduled about two weeks out rather than same-day, which is a deliberate choice — an estimator routing by area sees more properties properly. Factor that into the front of your timeline rather than the back.

Four Things That Prevent Delay

Final colors, sampled on your own walls

Not a chip — a two-foot square, on at least two walls, looked at in morning light and under your own lamps in the evening. Northern light is cooler than most showrooms and it pulls warmth out of everything. This is the single most common cause of a project pausing.

Sheen per room

Flat overhead, a washable low-sheen on walls that get touched, something harder on trim and doors.

What is in scope, room by room

Ceilings in or out, trim in or out, closets in or out. Settled in writing.

And where the furniture goes

On a full-level project this is a genuine logistical exercise and it is far easier to solve the week before than on the morning.

SEQUENCE

What Should Happen Before Paint, and What After

Where painting is one part of a larger project, the order matters more than the dates do, and getting it wrong means paying for work twice.

Before paint: anything that opens a wall or a ceiling

Electrical, plumbing, new windows, a wall coming out. All of it leaves patching behind, and patching is part of a painting scope rather than something to add afterward.

Before paint: popcorn ceiling removal

This one catches people regularly. Removing texture is messy work directly above walls you have just paid to finish. Ceilings first, always.

Before paint: drywall repair and any settling cracks

Same reasoning — the repair has to be skimmed and spot-primed before the finish goes on, or it flashes through.

After paint: flooring

Protecting a new floor is entirely possible and considerably more nerve-racking than working over an old one. If both are happening, paint first.

After paint: new trim and doors, if you are replacing them

Though it is worth asking whether the existing trim genuinely needs replacing — on a lot of houses a proper repaint of what is there is a fraction of the cost and reads almost identically.

And roughly alongside: cabinets

Cabinet refinishing runs on its own timeline because the doors leave the house, so it slots in without much conflict. Doing both in one winter is common and sensible.
